![]() ![]() It was "absolutely a book for grownups, for people who understand that comedy and tragedy are linked". It is comic, it is laughter, but it is laughter in the dark." Motion agreed it is a comic novel but said it was much more. But it is also, in a very interesting way, a very sad, melancholic book. You expect a book by Howard Jacobson to be very clever and very funny and it is both those things. Jacobson claimed he was going to spend his £50,000 prize money on a handbag for his wife. So the thought that's gone forever, is wonderful." ![]() "I have been increasingly talked about as underrated and I'm so sick of being described as the underrated Howard Jacobson. It was beginning to look like I was the novelist that never ever won the Booker prize. ![]() I don't think I'm alone in that, it's such a fantastic prize. "I have been wanting to win the Booker prize from the start. Jacobson admitted he had waited a long time and, yes, there had been bitterness. "Having said that, there is a particular pleasure in seeing somebody who is that good finally getting his just deserts." But he was not, in any way, being rewarded because it was his turn. The Booker prize chairman, Sir Andrew Motion, said it was "quite amazing" that this was the first time Jacobson had been shortlisted. There will be cries of "about time too" for a funny and warm writer, now 68, who has long been highly regarded but unrewarded with major literary prizes. ![]()

I started writing Vanguard by collecting stories of the women in my own family. ![]() From the earliest days of the republic to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and beyond, Jones excavates the lives and work of black women-Maria Stewart, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Fannie Lou Hamer, and more-who were the vanguard of women's rights, calling on America to realize its best ideals. She recounts how they defied both racism and sexism to fight for the ballot, and how they wielded political power to secure the equality and dignity of all persons. Jones offers a new history of African American women's political lives in America. In Vanguard, acclaimed historian Martha S. Securing their rights required a movement of their own. But this overwhelmingly white women's movement did not win the vote for most black women. When you tell them in this way, they seem to be more convincing. And rather than autobiographical works, or some sort of anthropological or sociological works-which make the exploration of these themes a little bit too clinical-to create a world in which you can imbue it with all of the richness and dimension, and also some of your own, original ideas, seems to speak to something in human beings that is almost intrinsic to the way we interpret reality. And the reason why I believe so is that Toni Morrison said it best: fiction is not fact, but it is truth. Do you think fiction is the best way of exploring some of the themes in these books? You’ve recommended some wonderful books and they’re all novels. Foreign Policy & International Relations. ![]() |
